Nikon D750 Advisory Notice

More Bum Nikon Cameras Recalled

Nikon released a third recall notice for the popular D750 today, stating that additional manufacturing dates are affected by problems with the shutter mechanism.  In January of 2015 and July of the same year, Nikon issued a recall for cameras manufactured between October and November of 2014.  Now, Nikon has recognized that units produced between December 2014 and June of 2015 were also affected, adding up to a nine month span of shoddy craftsmanship.

Details and affected models can be checked by serial number at the official Nikon website.

Nikon has had more than it’s fair share of product recalls (or “Service Advisories”) over the past few years. In addition to the three notices for the Nikon D750, the Nikon D810 had problems with bright pixels, and the Nikon D600 had problems with oily spots and grime from the shutter system transferring to the sensor.

It is worth noting that all three of the previously mentioned cameras are or were manufactured in Thailand rather than Japan (like the D800/D800e), though it is unclear whether this is a reflection on quality control at the facilities there or simply of the fact that more Nikon cameras are made there.  However, Japan opened a new facility in Laos in 2013 to begin manufacture of mid-range SLRs due to political instability and rising worker costs in Thailand.

Its troubling, however they have honored, and fixed(as far as I know)- I v used Nikon since 1984. I also owned Sony 7R, Leica M9P& Monochrom. Compared to Leica my own experience is that Nikon is a real photographers tool. Leica is a piece of jewelry. I sold the Leicas, and am back full-time(for now) with Nikon

Spot on, good article!

Just a sidenote: The D600 “oily spots and grime” issues and the current D750 “defective shutter” issues are far worse than the “bright pixels” issue on the D810.

As far as I’m concerned and also after speaking to an NPS rep, the “bright pixels” issue was fixed with the firmware update: V: 1.01.

First Nikon fixed the issue about one month after the D810 was released and pretty soon after that Nikon released the firmware V: 1.02 for everybody to download. This firmware update included among other things the fix for the “bright pixels” occurrence.

Or as Nikon put it in their own words something like this I remember:

“this firmware update will reduce the “bright pixels” issue which sometimes can occur……”.

For Nikon, not new news. Thirty or so years ago (pre-DSLR) a good friend and fellow photographer was cursed with repeated, premature battery burnout. Nikon repeatedly ‘repaired’ the camera, charging for the service and declining to honor the warranty (whatever it was – I was using rock-solid Minoltas). Since then I have steered clear of even thinking about the possibility of owning Nikon, attractive as their advertising is.
