New Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 and 12-24mm f/4 Lenses

Sony Announces Two Ultra-Wide Zooms: 16-35 f/2.8 and 12-24 f/4

This morning Sony announced two new ultra-wide angle zoom lenses for full-frame E-mount cameras. The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM covers a range that is popular with journalists and landscape photographers alike, and with a fast f/2.8 aperture and the stabilization built in to many Sony bodies, the lens should be excellent for event and action photographers. Sony claims that the lens will provide edge-to-edge sharpness, and it is sealed against dust and moisture. It’s worth noting that Sony also claims that the lens is “exceptionally lightweight and compact, maximising portability and usability,” but the lens weighs 680 grams. While the latest Canon equivalent weights a bit more at 790g, the previous Canon 16-35 f/2.8L II, weighed only 630 grams, so the Sony does not seem particularly “exceptional” in this regard. Nikon doesn’t make an f/2.8 for comparison.

If you’re looking for a more extreme perspective, the Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G will compete1 In focal length, if not in the marketplace. It is likely that the Sigma will be available in Sony mount in the future. with the widest full-frame zoom lenses on the market like the Sigma 12-24 f/4 ART and the Canon 11-24 f/4.  Like the 16-35, the 12-24 f/4 is weather sealed and contains a full compliment of specialty glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration and maintain sharpness across the frame.

Pricing & Availability

Like most Sony lenses, these two are not cheap. When the 16-35 f/2.8 begins shipping in August, it will cost $2199, a couple hundred dollars more than the most recent Canon. The 12-24 f/4 will should be ready sooner, shipping in July at the reasonable price of $1699, about $100 more than the Sigma ART series model.

These lenses will be available for pre-order shortly at B&H. You can find them at the links below:
