Canon 70D Announced : New APS-C Sensor

Canon 70D Announced

It’s been a long time since Canon has introduced a new mid-range SLR, but this evening, Canon has announced the highly anticipated 70D. As usual, information about the 70D has been trickling out to the public from anonymous sources for weeks, and it appears that it has been very accurate this time.

The Canon 70D contains a nice mixture of new features and upgrades with familiar ones from the 60D. Perhaps the most obvious advancement is the new sensor, a 20 megapixel CMOS with integrated dual-pixel phase detection sensors for use when shooting video. This is a step up from the hybrid-phase detection system found on the T5i / SL1 / EOS M , and Canon claims that the new system is 30% faster. The native ISO of the 70D reaches 12800, a full stop faster than the 60D, though no mention is made of the sensor’s noise performance or dynamic range, unfortunately.

Also noteworthy: the 70D sports a Digic 5+ processor, a 19 cross-type point AF system, 7 frame-per-second bursts, articulated touch-screen LCD, build-in WI-FI, and interestingly…. AF Micro-Adjustments. Previously, this was a feature reserved for the 7D and full-frame models.

Plenty more will be said about this camera before it is finally on store shelves IN SEPTEMBER. It will be priced at $1199, just a little more than the new price of the 60D when it was released. It is currently available for pre-order at B&H.
