PhaseOne IQ2 Series Backs

PhaseOne Announces Three New 645 Digital Backs

The Danish company “PhaseOne” may not be the household name that Nikon is, but among professionals, the company’s reputation for first-rate image quality has surpassed others that have been around for nearly a century, like Hasselblad and Leica. Today, PhaseOne announced their IQ2 series: three new medium-format digital backs for 6×4.5cm (ie, 645) cameras, ranging from 60-80 megapixels.

Before you start drooling or looking for your credit card, these backs will sell for $40,000+ dollars each.

The IQ280 is, as you may have guessed, an 80 megapixel back with 13 stops of dynamic range and an ISO scale that drops down to 35, perfect for long exposures and low-noise imaging.  The IQ60 comes in two versions, one color and one monochrome, both 60 megapixels. Due to the larger sensor receptors, PhaseOne claims that they can capture hour-long exposures while maintaining very low digital noise, a feat unthinkable with 35mm format cameras.  The monochrome version does not have a fixed IR/UV filter, so it can easily be used to capture infrared, UV or visible light images.
