New Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G for Full Frame

This morning, Sony announced a new lens in their G series: a 24-50mm f/2.8 lens for full-frame E-mount (and APS-C) cameras. As a “G” series lens, the 24-50mm provides a more compact, light-weight alternative to the 24-70 f/2.8 G Master lenses, and at about half the price. However, Sony did not skimp on features and quality: the lens has a full compliment of buttons and switches (custom button, AF/MF, click) and a manual aperture ring, and it has dust and weather sealing. The lens makes use of linear motors for fast and quiet AF as well.

For those who will be shooting in low light frequently, this lens may be an excellent, affordable (relatively) alternative to GM lenses… though Sigma and Tamron also produce great options. For those who don’t necessarily need the f/2.8 aperture, Sony’s new 20-70 f/4 may be more attractive at virtually the same price.

Expect the new Sony 24-50mm f/2.8 G lens to reach store shelves in May, when it will cost about $1099. The lens is currently available for pre-order from stores like Adorama and B&H Photo.
